Oxidation vs fading: the overlooked reason your RV looks dull and the fix that lasts
If your RV’s finish looks tired no matter how often you wash it, the culprit is usually oxidation, not simple fading. Fading is uniform color loss from UV exposure over time. Oxidation is the chalky, rough, cloudy layer that forms as the top of your gelcoat or paint literally erodes. It diffuses light, robs depth and gloss, and makes colors look flat. As we’ve learned caring for RV’s, no amount of soap will reverse oxidation—you have to remove the dead layer, refine the surface, then lock in protection.
Here’s the fix that lasts, adapted from professional RV detailing:
• Decontaminate: Use a strong mixture of Wade Maid’s concentrated Beast Wash to thoroughly wash and strip grime and embedded fallout.
• Assess: Identify whether you’re dealing with light haze or heavy chalking to choose the correct products.
• Correct: Machine compound with Wade Maid’s Rejuvenator to cut through oxidation evenly being careful to avoid burning edges or decals.
• Protect: Apply a UV-stable RV specific was, like Waid Maid’s Wade Wax, formulated for FRP/gelcoat/paint and vinyl graphics to seal pores and block future UV damage.
• Maintain: use deionized filtered water, Wade Maid’s Spit Shine Waterless Wash or a more diluted mixture of Wade Maid’s Beast Wash, to keep your finish looking sharp.
Unlike a quick wax, a proper correction bonds to the surface, resists detergents, and provides months of UV defense—so your RV keeps that deep, liquid shine across seasons. The same science that keeps superyachts mirror-bright will make your RV stand out on every road and in every campground.
